Mouille Point Lighthouse is reputed to be the oldest – working – lighthouse in South Africa. When the mists roll in over the sea, she starts up and her foghorn reverberates across the bay. Insomniacs unkindly refer to her as Moaning Millie.
I happen to find the long, low, slow sound of a foghorn soothing. Some misty nights when there are ships coming into the harbour there is a sort of Do-Re-Mi of multiple foghorns going on. One can hear Millie calling the ships and the ships answering her. Now how many cities can make that claim?

Sometimes it feels like the whole of South Africa is under construction. We did a round road trip a few months back and took in over 3000 kilometres. They were digging up everywhere. So I guess I shouldn’t feel too hard done by with what goes on in Green Point. Hopefully by the time the 2010 Soccer World Cup rolls in we will have new roads.
In the meantime the pavement along Western Boulevard is piled up high and waiting to be laid. And the pavements in town and the ones along the West Coast….
Today marks 99 days to go to the 2010 Soccer World Cup. A treat awaits those who are not sure what to expect. For those who believe that we have lion and elephants on the runways at our airports in South Africa. No, sorry we don’t.
But the good news is … we do have hungry wild animals, but they are in controlled areas. Shark cage diving is a great encounter for visitors. Or visit one of our game reserves just outside Cape Town.
Cape Town’s brand spanking new airport is on a par, if not better than many other international airports.
Tried to blow on a vufuzela today. I can’t do it. They seem to be not much more than hollow plastic tubes with a bell shape at the end of them. I think one has to make a buzzing sound with one’s lips to get a vufuzela to work.
The Green Point aka Cape Town Soccer stadium gets lit up at night. It’s spectacular, especially on these warm clear evenings we have been having.
Soccer balls, soccer balls everywhere. And vuvuzelas too. Woke up to the strains of a team of vuvuzelas this morning. Wonder how many there were? Imagine what it will be like at the time of the Soccer World Cup?
Advertisers have linked their campaigns to Soccer World Cup. People are buying flags and getting into the spirit of things. It’s obvious we are getting ready for this big event.
A man came to the door of our guest house come B and B and asked us to test drive a new concept called Tourism Radio. You plug this gadget into the lighter in your car and tune your car radio to 91.4 FM. And the next thing … you get a story all about the area you are driving through. How cool is that?
